Initially CRS – central reservation system was only limited to airlines and was called as airline reservation system (ARS) which used to act as an inventory management system containing all flights, their available seats, airline schedules, fare tariffs, passenger reservations and ticket records. Thus a computer reservation system in airline is an interface with the global distribution system (GDS system) to support online travel agencies and other customers to book flight tickets and other associated services through one single system.

Later central reservation system (CRS) got associated with hotel distribution system (IDS) or hotel CRS to manage hotel profile, rooms rates, room type, room availability, other information, descriptions, amenities, pictures, videos, local attractions, rate and conditions, administration, reporting  etc. It helped the hotel managers to manage most of their sales online through CRS and distribution system.
